INDIAN HARBOUR BEACH, Fla. - Former Illini Ruben Gonzales (PHI) claimed the USA F16 Futures doubles title, June 18-24, at the Kiwi Tennis Club alongside Barbados' Darian King, knocking off the reigning NCAA doubles champions in the semifinal round.
"Ruben continues to grow as a person and player, and this result shows it," associate head coach Marcos Asse said. "He defeated the 2012 NCAA doubles champions en route to the finals, so I know it felt extra good to him. I continue to expect big things like this from Ruben and know in order for him to take the next step forward, it will come from his continued work in his belief systems, not forehands and backhands."
Second-seeded Gonzales and King advanced to the quarterfinals with a walkover win against Michael Redlicki (USA) and Zachary White (CAN) and cruised to a 6-3, 7-5 victory over Americans Raymond Sarmiento and Dane Webb to make the semifinal.
There, the tandem picked up its second straight-set win of the tournament, downing NCAA champions and fourth-seeded Chase Buchanan (USA) and Blaz Rola (SLO) of Ohio State, 6-4, 6-3. Gonzales and King captured the title with a 6-2, 3-6, 10-4 win over American Kevin King and Colombian Juan-Carlos Spir in the final.
