CHAMPAIGN, ILL. - The University of Illinois men's tennis team was selected as one of 15 host sites for the 2010 Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Kick-Off Weekend, the ITA announced Wednesday. The Illini welcome Boise State, Washington and Virginia Tech to the Atkins Tennis Center on Jan. 29-30.
The top 60 teams in the nation will compete for the available 15 final spots at the ITA National Team Indoor Championship, hosted by the University of Virginia. Virginia earned an automatic invitation to the Final 16 since it will be the host for the 2010 team championship.
The top 15 nationally-ranked teams in the final 2009 team rankings were chosen as host sites. Illinois, who finished 12th in the final rankings, is the top seed at the Urbana site, followed by No. 2-seed Boise State, No. 3-seed Washington and No. 4-seed Virginia Tech.
No. 1-seed Illinois will face No. 4 Virginia Tech in the opening round, while No. 2 Boise State will take on No. 3 Washington in the other matchup on Friday, Jan. 29. Two matches are guaranteed for each team, as the winners and losers of each match will play on Saturday, Jan. 30. The 15 schools that win both of their matches at these events will be invited to play in the Feb. 12-15 ITA National Team Indoor Championships at the Boar's Head Sports Club (hosted by the Univ. of Virginia).
The other 14 host sites include Alabama, Baylor, Florida, Florida State, Georgia, Kentucky, Ohio State, Ole Miss, Texas, Texas A&M, UCLA, Southern California, Tennessee and Stanford.
