Illini Tennis Celebrates Season at Annual Awards Banquet

Champaign, Ill. – The Illinois men’s and women’s tennis teams honored the season’s accomplishments at the 21st annual Advantage Illinois Tennis Awards Banquet Wednesday evening at the I-Hotel. Awards were voted on by players, coaches and support staff associated with the teams.

Junior Farris Gosea was named Advantage Illinois Most Valuable Player for the 2013-14 season. Gosea was the squad’s first Big Ten Player of the Year since 2007 and a first team All-Big Ten selection. Gosea leads the team with 23 dual match victories.

On the women’s side, freshman Alexis Casati was selected as M.V.P. Casati boasts a team-leading 15-7 mark in singles, including a 5-6 record in conference play while playing primarily on court two. She also posted a solid season in doubles going 10-10 overall and 2-7 against conference opponents.

Freshman Louise Kwong and Gosea both took home the Most Improved award, while Casati and sophomore Brian Page were also tabbed as Players to Watch. Jared Hiltzik and Casati were named the men’s and women’s Scholar-Athletes as both currently possess the highest GPA’s on their respective squads.

Junior twins Tim and Melissa Kopinski garnered the strength and conditioning award, along with Tim’s teammate Gosea, It marked the second straight year Tim earned the award for his hard work off the court. Finally, Kopinski also picked up the Fighting Illini Spirit award, which was also handed out to senior Misia Kedzierski on the women’s side.
