Jared Hiltzik earned his third Big Ten Weekly honor in his freshman season with the Orange and Blue

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. - University of Illinois freshman Jared Hiltzik is having a fantastic debut season as acknowledged from the conference office, announcing his third Big Ten Tennis Athlete of the Week honor this season. The announcement comes on the heels of the Illini wrapping up their regular season with a 2-0 weekend with a 6-1 win over Indiana and 5-2 win at Purdue.
Last Friday, Hiltzik in his now accustomed No. 1 singles slot, downed #104 Sam Monette of Indiana 6-2, 6-3. Two Days later, Hiltzik defeated Purdue's Mark Kovacs 6-2, 6-4 to finish 9-2 in Big Ten singles action.
Pairing with fellow freshman Alex Jesse, the now 85th ranked duo picked up two doubles victories this past weekend to remain undefeated at 7-0 in conference doubles play. In addition, the tandem have now won nine straight.
Hiltzik is not only a three-time Big Ten Tennis Athlete of the Week winner but has now won the honor in consecutive weeks, surging at the right time with the conference tournament right around the corner on Thursday. Finally, Hiltzik is the first Illini to achieve the award three times in a single spring season since Ruben Gonzales in 2008.
Hiltzik and the Illini are the No. 4 seed in the 2013 edition of the Big Ten Tournament, earning a first round bye on Thursday. Illinois will play Friday morning at 10 a.m. CT vs. the winner of the Northwestern and Iowa match.
