Hiltzik Earns Second Big Ten Tennis Athlete of the Week

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. - Last weekend against #5 Ohio State and Penn State, freshman Jared Hiltzik accumulated a 4-0 combined mark in doubles and singles, and as a result, the conference office came calling on Wednesday with the Big Ten Tennis Athlete of the Week award. The honor is Hiltzik's second on the season, previously acknowledged on March 6.
On Friday, Hiltzik matched up with #9 Blaz Rola, who entered the match undefeated at 19-0.Thus, the Wilmette native handed Rola his first loss on the year after winning in straight sets, 6-4, 7-5. Earlier that day, Hiltzik teamed with Alex Jesse to knock off yet another ranked foe in #32 McCarthy/Van Engelen, 9-8(3) in doubles.
On Sunday, Hiltzik/Jesse carried their doubles momentum into a 8-4 victory over Baden/Chen from Penn State in the No. 1 position. Therefore, Hiltzik/Jesse moved to 5-0 in Big Ten play in doubles when paired together. Next, Hiltzik capped off his impressive weekend with a 6-4, 7-5 win over Russell Bader, once again in the No. 1 slot for the Illini.
For their body of work this season, Hiltzik/Jesse have claimed their first ITA doubles ranking, checking in this week at #80. Also, Jared Hiltzik has obtained his highest singles ranking to date at #31.
Hiltzik and the Illini play their final regular season home match this Friday at 3 p.m. CT. when they host Indiana for Senior Day.
