URBANA, Ill. – The conference office announced Tuesday afternoon that Illinois junior Farris Gosea was the Big Ten Tennis Athlete of the Week, earning his first weekly award of his career. In addition, for the first time since 2009, three different Illini have been named Big Ten Tennis Athlete of the Week in the same season, as Gosea follows teammates Jared Hiltzik and Tim Kopinski

Gosea was a big component of the Illini's 4-1 win over then No. 23 Northwestern. The junior teamed with Alex Jesse to start the day, where they defeated Alp Horoz and Sam Shropshire 8-6 to clinch the doubles point.

Gosea was then inserted into the No. 1 singles position for the first time of his career where he quickly dispatched No. 44 Raleigh Smith 6-2, 6-1. Thus, Gosea has defeated four of the last five players he's faced ranked in the top-50 in singles, all in straight sets.

The Cardiff, Wales native has made huge strides already in 2014. Gosea started the year ranked No. 106 in singles and has already climbed all the way to No. 23 in the latest ITA poll. Primarily playing the No. 2 spot, Gosea is 8-2 overall this dual match season.

Gosea and the sixth-ranked Illini squad return to action Sunday, March 9 for a double-header at the Atkins Tennis Center. First up is Big Ten foe Purdue at Noon, followed by Detroit Mercy at 6:30 p.m.
