Big Ten Release

URBANA, Ill. - University of Illinois sophomore Tim Kopinski was named Big Ten Men's Tennis Athlete of the Week after his performance this past Saturday night that resulted in the Illini upsetting No. 7 Kentucky. The award is Kopinski's first in his career and the first since alum Dennis Nevolo collected his 8th weekly Big Ten honor on April 3, 2012.

Saturday night, Kopinski squared off with Kentucky's Alejandro Gomez in the number three singles matchup. As the battle between the two waged on, the rest of the Illini did their part, tying the game at 3-3. Thus, the decisive point came down to Kopinski.

The tight contest between the two on court three was sent to a highly anticipated third set, where the Illini sophomore jumped out to a 4-3 lead. Then the Palos Hills native dug deep and won the next two games to take the match 6-1, 4-6, 6-3. Thus, Illinois beat Kentucky 4-3 and handed the Wildcats their first loss of the season.

Adding to his overall performance on the night, Tim Kopinski along with Ross Guignon defeated the 35th best doubles tandem in the country in Tom Jomby and Kevin Lai, 8-4.

Kopinski and the rest of the Illini return to action the weekend of March 1 when they welcome Big Ten foes Iowa and Northwestern.
