CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – In 2013, Jared Hiltzik became the first Illini to garner the Big Ten Tennis Athlete of the Week award three times in the spring dual season. Now, after the team's first week of play in 2014, Hiltzik has already earned his first weekly conference honor of the new spring season.
The Big Ten office announced Hiltzik the winner after a stellar debut at the annual Illini Open in Ft. Myers, Fla. that saw the sophomore take home the tournament's Most Outstanding Player award. The fourth ranked singles player in the country produced a 3-0 mark in singles action, winning each of his matches in straight sets. Hiltzik defeated a pair of South Florida players in Oliver Pramming 6-5(4), 6-4 and No. 100 Sasha Gozun 6-4, 6-4. Then the sophomore took down No. 111 Gordon Watson from the University of Florida, 6-4, 6-4.
Hiltzik also found success in doubles with his partner and fellow sophomore Alex Jesse. The Illinois duo, ranked 31st in the country, knocked off No. 16 Pramming/Gonzalez of South Florida 6-2, and Newman/Hidalgo from UF 6-3 , before falling to Florida's Watson/Lipman 6-1 on day three.
Hiltzik and the rest of the Illini head to Ole Miss this weekend for the 2014 ITA Kick-Off Weekend. Illinois will battle Clemson at 2 p.m. CT on Saturday, Jan. 25. If successful, the Orange and Blue will play the winner of the Ole Miss/Michigan match for a chance to qualify for the National Indoor Championships.
