SCOTTSDALE, ARIZ. - Future Illini men's tennis player Aron Hiltzik, who is set to join the program in fall 2014, was making the most of his holiday break by making deep runs at the USTA National Winter Championships. Hiltzik took the doubles crown in the 64-team field and placed third in the 128-man singles bracket. The Boys' 18 singles and doubles tournaments were held in Scottsdale, Arizona and wrapped up play this afternoon.
"Marcos and I are pleased for Aron to not only take the doubles title, but bounce back and claim third place in singles," said Illinois head coach Brad Dancer. "He is beginning to show resiliency and more purpose with his play. He will only get better as he keeps pushing himself."
Hiltzik and his partner Corwin were the 14th-seeded team in the doubles bracket. After cruising to a 6-3, 6-3 win in the quarterfinals over the 12th-seeded Harrington/Wang, the duo went on to defeat Genender/Wasserman 6-2, 6-7(2), 6-0 in the semis.
In the finals, Hiltzik/Corwin took down the number one overall seed Fawcett/Stewart. After losing the first set 6-3, the pair rallied in the second set to take it 7-6(4) before clinching it in the third with a 6-3 score.
On the singles side, Hiltzik continued to impress, defeating No. 3 William Griffith 7-6(8), 6-4 in the quarters before Fawcett enacted some revenge in the semis with a 6-4, 6-0 win. Hiltzik was able to perservere however, taking the third place match over Felix Corwin 6-7(8), 6-2, 6-2.
Hiltzik is a five-star recruit and ranked 19th overall in the 2014 class. He is also ranked as the third highest prospect in the state of Illinois. He will join fellow five-star recruit Toshiki Matsuya as the two incoming freshmen players.
