Several Illini Compete on Day Two of JSM Challenger

URBANA, Ill. - Four Fighting Illini competed in the second qualifying round of singles in the JSM Challenger Sunday at Atkins Tennis. Each of the four came up short after advancing to day-two action with strong play on Saturday.
Illinois freshmen Jared Hiltzik and Alex Jesse advanced to the final qualifying round in doubles play with a 7-5, 6-3 win over Orange and Blue teammates Bruno Abdelnour and Julian Childers and will square off with Illini Brian Page and Stephen Hoh tomorrow afternoon for the final spot in the main doubles draw.
In singles play, Hoh dropped a tight three-setter, while Childers, Hiltzkik and Jesse fell in straight sets to end each of their quests for a spot in the main singles draw, which begins Monday at approximately 1 p.m. The singles bracket will feature former Illini standout and two-time All-American Dennis Nevolo and current Illinois sophomore Tim Kopinski as well as past JSM Challenger champions Michael Russell (2009), Alex Kuznetsov (2011) and 2008 doubles winner Bobby Reynolds.
The USTA released the main doubles draw on Sunday afternoon. The field will include USTA/ITA Midwest Regional doubles champions Kopinski and Farris Gosea along with former Illini Ruben Gonzales and Nevolo.
Play resumes tomorrow at 10 a.m. The JSM Challenger marks the final event of the USTA Pro Circuit season. Action will be streamed live at procircuit.usta.com.
