FLUSHING, N.Y. - Senior Dennis Nevolo captured an opening-round victory over a nationally ranked opponent to advance to the round of 16 at the USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center on Thursday.
"I thought I was moving well," Nevolo said. "(Kyle) McMorrow did not execute so well in the beginning, which gave me some break point opportunities. When I had an opportunity to move forward, I took it and executed well enough to keep him on defense."
Nevolo, who is ranked seventh nationally and seeded eighth in the tournament, cruised to a quick 6-2, 6-4 victory over No. 22 Kyle McMorrow of Washington in round-one action. The 2011 All-American will now face No. 9 Jose Hernandez of North Carolina in second-round play tomorrow.
Meanwhile, fellow senior Roy Kalmanovich, No. 71 in the preseason rankings, did not fare as well as his teammate, as the Framingham, Mass., native dropped a 7-6(1), 6-4 thriller to No. 14 Ryan Thacher of Stanford. With the loss, Kalmanovich falls to the consolation draw.
The Illini are one of eight teams to have multiple players in the singles tournament. Nevolo and Kalmanovich each qualified with their quarterfinal berths at the ITA All-American Championships in early October.
"This tournament is great," Nevolo said. "I would say it's my favorite college tournament. It's a nice atmosphere here. They do a great job with great hospitality, great players."
Nevolo will be back in action tomorrow for the round of 16, beginning at 8 a.m. CT.
