Oct. 28, 2012
COLLEGE STATION, Texas - The Fighting Illini men's tennis team wrapped up play in the Conference Challenge on Sunday at Texas A&M. There, the Orange and Blue posted one doubles and three singles wins on the final day of competition, and freshman Jared Hiltzik finished the tournament a perfect 3-0 in singles action.
"Julian (Childers) continues to grow and was one of the highlights of the tournament," associate head coach Marcos Asse said. "It was good to see Jared perform well, too. We still have some lessons to learn, especially the freshmen. But we continue to grow in each competitive outing we have. The hard work is showing, especially in certain areas, but we now need to get back and work even harder."
In round three of singles, Hiltzik continued his strong play, cruising to a swift 6-3, 6-4 win over Chris Simpson of LSU to remain undefeated in singles throughout the three-day tournament.
Meanwhile, fellow newcomer Julian Childers posted his third solo win as well, taking down Oklahoma's John Harrison Warden, 2-6, 6-0, 6-3. The Matteson, Ill., native ended the tournament 3-1 in singles action. Sophomore Tim Kopinski rounded out the singles winners for Illinois, downing Boris Arias (LSU), 5-7, 6-4, 6-4 to go 2-1 over the weekend.
In doubles, freshmen Brian Page and Childers paired up to secure the lone win for the Illini, defeating Leonard Stakholvsky and Nick Papac, 8-6.
Overall, the Illini went 4-5 in doubles and 10-9 in singles throughout the Conference Challenge. Five Illini captured at least one singles win, and four doubles combinations claimed victories as well.
The Orange and Blue will return to action next weekend at the Big Ten Indoor Championships, Nov. 2-5 in Madison, Wis.
