Illini Begin Play at Conference Challenge
Oct. 26, 2012
COLLEGE STATION, Texas - The Fighting Illini men's tennis team opened play at the Conference Challenge Friday at Texas A&M's George P. Mitchell Tennis Center and Omar Smith Tennis Complex. The Orange and Blue captured four wins on day one of the tournament.
"We continue to play around with the doubles combinations to get ready for the spring," associate head coach Marcos Asse said. "We're getting closer to solidifying those doubles teams. It was also great to see Julian (Childers) grow a little more in singles. He continues to mature and get better with every match he plays."
In the opening round of doubles play, sophomore Ross Guignon and freshman Brian Page picked up Illinois' first win of the day with an 8-5 decision against Southern Methodist's Artur Kazijevs and Mischa Nowicki.
The Orange and Blue did not claim any other wins in the first round but turned things around in the second, securing victories in two of three matches. Sophomore Tim Kopinski paired up with senior Bruno Abdelnour for an 8-5 win over Oklahoma's John Harrison Warden and Nick Papac, while freshmen Jared Hiltzik and Alex Jesse also turned in an 8-5 victory to take down Tam Trinh and Roger Anderson (LSU).
In singles play, freshman Julian Childers cruised past Texas A&M's Behzad Minavi with a quick 6-4, 6-4 win.
The Orange and Blue will return to action tomorrow at 10 a.m. CT for day two of the three-day tournament.
