Ruben Gonzales' bid for a Midwest Regional singles title ended in the round of 16.

ANN ARBOR, Mich. - Sophomore Ruben Gonzales lost in the round of 16 of the singles main draw at the Wilson/ITA Midwest Regional Championships at the Varsity Tennis Center in Ann Arbor, Mich., on Sunday (Oct. 23). The Illini had two doubles teams advance on Sunday.
"Ruben certainly had his chances but he wasn't able to execute, especially in the second set." head coach Brad Dancer said.
Gonzales' loss came at the hands of Jeremy Sonkin (WIS); 6-7(2), 6-4, 7-5.
The Illini had good results in doubles competition on Sunday. The 13th-seeded pairing of Monte Tucker and Marc Spicijaric advanced beating Patrick Buchanan and Montoya Santiago (Notre Dame), 8-6. They won again in the round of 16 with an 8-3 victory over Ryan Heller and Andrew Mazlin (Michigan).
Another duo to advance to the quarterfinals was 10th-seeded Brandon Davis and Pramod Dabir who won on Sunday morning over Adam Ford and Alex Friesen (Northern Illinois), 8-1. They then won with an 8-6 triumph over No. 2-seed Brian Hung and Matko Maravic (Michigan).
Ruben Gonzlas and Brandon Davis could not overcome their opponent from Michigan, losing 8-3 to Peter Aartsadn Steve Peretz.
"Kent (Kinnear, assistant coach) did an excellent job preparing the doubles teams," Dancer said. "They were well prepared and took advantage of the opportunities to move on."
