COLUMBUS, Ohio - The Illini were able to advance to the semifinals in both the singles and doubles brackets at the ITA Midwest Regionals; yet, their road to the ITA National Indoor Championships stopped there. The Illinois foursome of Tim Kopinski, Ross Guignon, Alex Jesse and Farris Gosea all made solid runs in the tournament hosted by Ohio State at the Varsity Tennis Center in Columbus, but were ultimately undone by players from Ohio State and Notre Dame.

The Orange and Blue may not have defended their doubles championship at the Midwest Regionals this year, but they did find great success against other Big Ten foes. As a collective group in both singles and doubles, the Illini went 8-2 against conference opponents last week.

In the singles bracket, both Farris Gosea and No. 3 seed Tim Kopinski made runs to the quarterfinals where they then had to square off against each other for a semifinal berth. In the battle of the Illini, Gosea emerged victorious with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Kopinski.

In the semis, Gosea squared off with No. 1 seed Peter Kobelt from Ohio State. Kobelt then defeated Gosea 6-1, 6-4 and went on to win the singles bracket.

On the doubles side, Jesse/Gosea made a run to the quarterfinals, earning wins against teams from Notre Dame, Cleveland State and Northwestern. However, it was another team from Notre Dame, Lawson/Andrews, who bested the Ilini duo 8-5.

Meanwhile, the No. 1 seed of Kopinski/Guignon proved dominant over conference opponents, picking up wins vs. teams from Michigan and Michigan State. Kopinski/Guignon then tried to avenge Jesse/Gosea in the semis against Lawson/Andrews, but the Notre Dame tandem was victorious once more, this time in a hard fought, 8-7(5) battle.
