EAST LANSING, Mich. - Four members of the Fighting Illini men's tennis team reached the singles quarterfinals of the USTA/ITA Midwest Regional Saturday at the MSU Indoor Tennis Facility, while one Illinois tandem advanced to the quarterfinals in doubles play. Senior Stephen Hoh, sophomore Tim Kopinski and freshmen Brian Page and Jared Hiltzik remain in singles, while Kopinski and sophomore Farris Gosea remain in doubles.
In singles action, Page narrowly edged 10th-seeded and 69th-ranked Spencer Wolf of Northwestern in a 7-6(7), 0-6, 7-5 thriller in round two of the main draw. In the following round, the newcomer moved past Ohio State's Hunter Callaghan with a 6-1, 6-4 win. Classmate Hiltzik, who is seeded 13th in the tournament, downed OSU's Wyatt Lippert, 6-2, 6-1, before coming out on top in a 7-5, 1-6, 6-2 battle with Michael Tenzer of Wisconsin-Green Bay.
Meanwhile, Kopinski and Hoh made quick work of their opponents, each winning a pair of two-set matches. Kopinski claimed a convincing 6-4, 6-1 victory over Mihir Kumar of Northwestern and cruised to another 6-4, 6-1 victory in round three to take down Dor Amir of Northern Illinois. Hoh, the 11th seed, knocked off Wildcat Raleigh Smith, 7-5, 6-1, and followed up with a 7-6, 6-4 win over No. 66 Aaron Pfister of Michigan State to reach Sunday's quarterfinals.
Sophomore Ross Guignon won his second-round match against Oskar Wikberg of Wisconsin, 6-4, 5-7, 6-4, but came up short in the following round, falling 6-4, 7-6 to No. 35 Peter Kobelt of Ohio State. Gosea stumbled in the second round, taking a three-set loss.
Gosea managed to bounce back in doubles play, pairing up with Kopinski for an 8-5 win in round three after advancing in the second round by default. Eleventh-seeded Page and Hoh breezed through round two with an 8-1 win over Cleveland State's Jorg van der Vloet and Jay Jones. The pair struggled in the next round, however, falling 8-2.
Hiltzik and fellow newcomer Alex Jesse also won their second-round match, downing 10th-seeded Billy Bertha and Alex Robles of Wisconsin, 8-5. The duo dropped their following match to exit the doubles competition.
Action resumes tomorrow at 9 a.m. CT, starting with the singles quarterfinals, which will feature a match between Page and Kopinski. The Illini make up four of the remaining eight singles players.
