MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. - Sophomore Jordan Knue and freshman Calon Alpar could not overcome their first-round contests at the 2007 Wilson/Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Midwest Regionals on the campus of the University of Minnesota. With opening-round losses, Knue and Alpar have dropped into the consolation bracket, leaving seniors Brandon Davis and Ryan Rowe and sophomore Billy Heiser to carry the Illinois torch in the singles main draw at the Midwest Regionals being hosted at the Baseline Tennis Center.
For the day's results, Knue fell to Marquette's Nick Boulieris - the qualifying bracket's 14th-seed - in a tough 7-6, 6-4, loss. For Alpar, a slow start proved his demise in a 6-3, 6-0, loss to Viktor Maksimcuk of Louisville.
The continued schedule at the Regionals includes two rounds of consolation play in the qualifying bracket and two rounds of main draw doubles play on Friday.
Tomorrow's Illini action includes Knue and Alpar taking on Ra'ees Ismail (XU) and David Seyferth (Northwestern), respectively, in the qualifying consolation bracket.
In doubles, Rowe and Heiser, seeded fourth, open play against Trenton Hagan and Dusan Medan of Marquette at 5 p.m., while Davis and Knue are set to battle Walker Grimes and Greg Holm of Iowa at 4 p.m. Should both Illini tandems advance, they will play their second-round main draw doubles matches not before 8:30 p.m.
