EAST LANSING, Mich. - Fighting Illini freshman Julian Childers advanced to the third qualifying round of the USTA/ITA Midwest Regional Thursday at the MSU Indoor Tennis Facility with a pair of straight-set wins on day one of the five-day tournament.

Childers started off with a 6-4, 6-4 victory over Notre Dame's Ken Sabacinski in opening-round action. The Orange and Blue newcomer continued his success in round two with another 6-4, 6-4 decision to take down Niklas Jonsson of Cleveland State.

Meanwhile, fellow freshman Alex Jesse fell short in a 2-6, 6-3, 6-4 battle with Matt Ford (CSU).

Childers will return to the court tomorrow morning for the final round of qualifying play, which begins at 7 a.m. CT. His teammates will join him in mid-day doubles action, which will feature duos Stephen Hoh and Brian Page, Jared Hiltzik and Jesse, Bruno Abdelnour and Ross Guignon and Farris Gosea and Tim Kopinski.
