Illini Undefeated in Doubles at Napa Valley Classic
Sept. 22, 2012
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - The Fighting Illini men's tennis team won five matches Saturday with one win at the University of Virginia Ranked +1 Invitational in Charlottesville, Va., and four at the Audi Napa Valley Tennis Classic in St. Helena, Calif. The Orange and Blue went a perfect 2-0 in doubles play in Napa Valley to remain undefeated on the doubles court at that tournament.
"I think the young guys are still learning some important lessons," associate head coach Marcos Asse said. "We need to grow exponentially to be ready in January."
Senior Bruno Abdelnour started the day at the UVa Ranked +1 Invite with a thrilling 4-6, 6-3, 6-2 victory over Virginia Commonwealth's Alejandro Argente. The Illini could not continue that singles momentum, dropping their next five matches on the east coast.
Out west, the Orange and Blue went 2-2 in singles for the second straight day. This time, sophomore Tim Kopinski and senior Stephen Hoh led the charge, each grabbing 6-1, 6-2 wins to down Harvard's Alex Steinroder and Shaun Chaudhuri, respectively.
In doubles play, sophomores Farris Gosea and Kopinski knocked off 23rd-ranked Christoffer Konigsfeldt and Ben McLachlan of California, 8-5. Meanwhile, Hoh and newcomer Brian Page cruised to their team-leading fifth doubles win of the season with an 8-4 decision over Harvard duo Chaudhuri and Steinroder.
"We remain undefeated in doubles out here," Asse said of his players in Napa Valley. "We are definitely winning the energy battle when we go out to play, which is awesome to see and fun to watch. It's only going to get more exciting when we get back to Atkins for the dual season. Hopefully, everyone can rebound tomorrow and finish up with one more win."
The Orange and Blue will wrap up both tournaments tomorrow. Action in Virginia resumes at 8 a.m. CT, while play in Napa Valley continues at 10 a.m. CT.
