Junior Stephen Hoh was one of three Illini to win a singles match in day-one action.
Sept. 23, 2011
Roy Kalmanovich and juniors Stephen Hoh and Bruno Abdelnour captured big wins for the Orange and Blue.
"It was a good day in singles," Illini assistant coach Marcos Asse said. "They all three played some tough competition and were each a little rusty to start, but as their matches progressed, they got better. I don't think it was Hoh's best match execution-wise, but he still managed to get the win. He wasn't serving his best but found a way to use a couple of his other tools to pull out the victory, which was great for him. It's a testament to the toughness that he's developed over the summer and will hopefully continue to develop this fall."
After a rocky start in doubles play, the Illini fought back to go undefeated in first-round singles action. Hoh, who is seeded fifth in his respective draw, swept Louisville's Sebastian Stiefelmeyer, 6-3, 6-3. Meanwhile, third-seeded Kalmanovich picked up a straight-set victory of his own in his fall 2011 debut, dropping Wake Forest's Adam Lee, 6-4, 6-2. Abdelnour also had a successful day in singles, as the Syria native picked up a hard-fought win over North Carolina's Oysten Steiro, 5-7, 6-2, 6-0.
"All three of our guys will have tough matches tomorrow," Asse said. "Probably the highlight will be Bruno's match. I think it's a great opportunity for him to face Mitchell Frank, a freshman at Virginia who had a great summer. That will definitely be an exciting match, and playing in Frank's hometown should be fun."
The Orange and Blue will return to action tomorrow at 8 a.m. CT for day two of the University of Virginia Ranked +1 Invitational. Results and recap will be available at fightingillini.com.
