OLYMPIA FIELDS, Ill. - The Illini claimed four wins Sunday in the final day of the 2010 Olympia Fields Country Club Fighting Illini Invitational. Leading the way for the Illini was junior Dennis Nevolo, who went 4-0 in singles for the weekend without dropping a set and for his efforts, earned the tournament's Most Outstanding Player award.
"I'm very proud of the way Dennis played this weekend," head coach Brad Dancer said. "It's nice to get wins, but for him, he made improvements in areas like defensive shot selection, courage in serving and increasing his transition play throughout the course of the weekend. If he continues to improve like that, he'll feel good about the fall and spring."
"I'd like to give a huge thanks to the Olympia Fields staff and organizers, including Russell, Carol, Wayne, Bart and Rick, for all of their incredible efforts in putting on such a great tournament," Dancer said. "It really has become like a second home for us and we hope to continue to build a tournament that keeps getting better."
In Sunday's matches, Nevolo topped Notre Dame's Stephen Havens, 6-2, 6-3, and Greg Andrews, 6-3, 7-5, while senior Abe Souza defeated Jarryd Botha of Alabama, 7-6 (6), 4-6, 6-3, and sophomore Stephen Hoh knocked off David Hopkins of Wake Forest, 7-5, 7-6 (5).
For the weekend, the Illini won a combined 19 matches, including 14 in singles play, and posted a 5-1 mark in doubles. Illinois will be back in action next weekend at the Napa Valley Invitational in St. Helena, Calif., and the UVA Ranked Plus One Invitational in Charlottesville, Va., with both running Sept. 24-26.
