OLYMPIA FIELDS, Ill. - The Illinois men's tennis team made its fall debut earlier today at the third annual Olympia Fields Country Club (OFCC) Fighting Illini Invitational in Olympia Fields, Ill. The Illini went 4-0 in doubles and picked up a pair of wins in singles play, competing against players from Florida State, Miami (FL), Northwestern and Notre Dame.
Taking on four different doubles teams from Notre Dame, the duo of Dennis Nevolo and Marek Czerwinski knocked off Spencer Talmadge and Matt Johnson, 8-2, and Stephen Havens and Daniel Stahl, 8-4, while Abe Souza and Connor Roth collected wins against Michael Moore and Takashi Yoshii, 8-4 and David Anderson and Blas Moros, 8-4.
In singles action, Czerwinski defeated Anderson, 6-1, 6-1 and Roth swept Talmadge, 6-2, 7-6 (4), while Nevolo dropped a two-hours plus heartbreaker, 6-4, 7-6 (6) to Stahl and Souza fell 6-3, 7-6 (6) to Florida State's Vahid Mirzadeh.
The three-day event continues tomorrow with singles play beginning at 9 a.m. Admission to the OFCC Fighting Illini Invitational is free.
