Illini 3-0 in Doubles on Final Day at Olympia Fields
Sept. 16, 2012
OLYMPIA FIELDS, Ill. - The Fighting Illini men's tennis team went a perfect 3-0 in doubles play Sunday to wrap up action at the Olympia Fields Country Club Fighting Illini Invitational with a 7-2 mark in doubles throughout the three-day tournament. Sophomore Tim Kopinski highlighted the day with a two-set singles victory after cruising to his first doubles win of the season.
"It's interesting to see such a young group of guys play with the right type of energy in doubles," head coach Brad Dancer said. "But it was certainly an educational day for us. It was a big lesson learned in singles. We have a lot of things to get better at, so it's time to get back to the drawing board."
The Orange and Blue had a strong start to the day with freshman Jared Hiltzik and sophomore Farris Gosea pairing up for their third doubles win of the tournament, downing Texas' Ben Chen and Alex Hilliard in a hard-fought 9-8(4) thriller.
Fellow newcomer Brian Page and senior Stephen Hoh followed up with a swift 8-2 decision against Beck Pennington and Brett Johnson of Kentucky to capture their third win as well. Meanwhile, Kopinski and freshman Alex Jesse kept the Illini doubles streak alive with a decisive 8-2 win over Notre Dame's Spencer Talmadge and Alex Lawson, marking their first win as a tandem.
The Illini could not maintain that momentum in singles, however, dropping six of seven matches to end the tournament 9-18 in singles. Kopinski was a bright spot for Illinois, helping the squad avoid a sweep with a 6-4, 7-6(5) win over Notre Dame's Quentin Monaghan. The Palos Hills, Ill., native finished the tournament 2-2 in singles play after a sluggish 0-2 start.
Illinois will return to action next weekend, Sept. 21-23, sending some players to the Virginia Ranked +1 Invitational in Charlottesville, Va., and others to the Napa Valley Invitational in St. Helena, Calif.
