Illini Go 6-6 in Day One at Olympia Fields
Sept. 14, 2012
OLYMPIA FIELDS, Ill. - The Fighting Illini men's tennis team opened the fall season Friday, going 4-2 in doubles and 2-4 singles at the Olympia Fields Country Club Fighting Illini Invitational. Senior Stephen Hoh and freshman Brian Page each won two matches in doubles and one in singles to lead the Orange and Blue.
"We saw some great matches all around today," head coach Brad Dancer said. "We won exactly half our matches, which shows how great the competition is here at this tournament. I think Hoh was really composed today and played great defense out there, and that was probably the difference in his match."
Freshman Jared Hiltzik and sophomore Farris Gosea started the day with an 8-3 victory over California's Andrew Scholnick and Gregory Bayane in the opening round of doubles play and followed up with an 8-5 win over Pepperdine's Sebastian Fanselow and David Sofaer in round two. Meanwhile, Page and Hoh teamed up for a 9-8(5) victory over Fanselow and Sofaer in first-round action before downing Scholnick and Bayane, 8-5.
In singles play, Hoh and Page maintained their momentum and cruised to straight-set victories to remain undefeated through day one of the tournament. Hoh took down 63rd-ranked Mousheg Hovhannisyan (Pepperdine), 6-4, 6-3, while Page secured his career-first singles win in a 6-3, 6-2 decision against Ben Chen (Texas).
"I thought the energy in our doubles was really high," Dancer said. "We just have to improve in our singles and get back out there tomorrow."
The Illini will return to action tomorrow for two rounds of singles, beginning at 9 a.m. CT.
