ATHENS, Ga. - Illinois senior Dennis Nevolo advanced to the round of 16 at the NCAA Singles Championships Thursday at the University of Georgia's Dan Magill Tennis Complex, while he and fellow senior Roy Kalmanovich won their opening-round match to reach the Sweet 16 in doubles play.
Seventh-seeded Nevolo downed No. 20 Marcel Thiemann (Ole Miss), 6-4, 7-6(6), to reach the Sweet 16 for the second straight season. The victory marks a single-season career-high 32 singles wins for the Gurnee, Ill., native.
In doubles, No. 21 Nevolo and Kalmanovich knocked off No. 25 George Coupland and Artem Ilyushin of Mississippi State, 6-3, 0-6, 6-2, marking the second time Nevolo has reached the round of 16 in doubles.
Nevolo will face No. 9 Blaz Rola (Ohio State) on Friday at 10 a.m. and will team up with Kalmanovich to take on top-seeded duo Rola and Chase Buchanan in second-round action of the NCAA Doubles Championships on Friday at 3 p.m. The Illini tandem has faced Rola and Buchanan twice this season, coming up short in the first and failing to finish the second before the doubles point was decided.
