#10 Illinois Takes Care of Minnesota, 5-1
April 18, 2014
Urbana, Ill. - The 10th-ranked Fighting Illini men's tennis team improved its winning streak to six Friday afternoon in Champaign with a 5-1 win over Minnesota. Illinois also improved to 19-7 overall and 8-2 in conference play, all while remaining undefeated at home with a 10-0 mark.
"The guys continue to battle regardless of circumstances," Illinois head coach Brad Dancer said. "We have a ton of respect for coach Young and how hard Minnesota always plays. We knew it was going to be a tough match."
The Illini dropped the doubles point, as Minnesota took the early 1-0 advantage today. Blake Bazarnik and Julian Childers got the Illini off to a fast start with a 8-2 win over Juan Pablo Ramirez and Franz Sydow. However, the Illini would then drop two tight matches as Jared Hiltzik and Farris Gosea fell first to No. 20 Jack Hamburg and Mathieu Froment 8-5 in No. 1 doubles. Then, in a marathon match to claim the doubles point, Ross Guignon and Alex Jesse fell to No. 20 Leandro Toledo and Eric Frueh 8-7 (12-10).
"Obviously doubles was painful," added Dancer. "After having so many opportunities, you are worried about how the team is going to respond. Are they going to be able come out rejuvenated? I thought Farris did a great job. Bazarnik did a great job. AJ made strides and Julian had much better intent and purpose in his play today."
Like they have for most of the season, the Orange and Blue once again came out strong in singles, as all but one match was decided in straight sets. Blake Bazarnik claimed the first point for the Illini defeating Jack Hamburg 6-2, 6-3 on court three to move his dual match record to 17-5.
No. 13 Farris Gosea remained undefeated in conference play when he defeated No. 39 Leandro Toledo 6-4, 6-4 on court one. On court six, Julian Childers made quick work of Juan Pablo Ramirez with a 6-3, 6-2 victory. Then, No. 8 Jared Hiltzik clinched the victory for Illinois with a 6-4, 6-3 victory over Ruben Weber on court two. Hiltzik has now won six consecutive matches.
Up next, the Orange and Blue remain at home for the regular season finale against Wisconsin on Sunday, April 20 ay Noon CT.
