CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The #19 Illinois men's tennis team will return home from North Carolina without a win, falling 5-2 to the UNC Tarheels on Saturday night inside the Cone-Kenfield Indoor Tennis Center. Juniors Farris Gosea and Blake Bazarnik were responsible for the Illini's two points.

"It was a tough weekend for us, but we did some things better today," said Illinois head coach Brad Dancer. "We just couldn't come out on the winning end. Schnur played very well vs. Jared and that ended up being a critical match. Credit to North Carolina and we'll get the team ready to go Wednesday."

In doubles, the No. 4 ranked team of Ross Guignon and Tim Kopinski was the lone Illinois duo to find success, making quick work of Clark/Schnur, 6-1. No. 31 Jared Hiltzik and Alex Jesse played in the two slot for the first time this spring and fell 6-2 to Murray/Schneider. UNC earned the first point of the match after Hess-Olesen/Vick defeated No. 27 Bazarnik/Gosea 6-4.

UNC's Jack Murray extended the lead for the home team when he finished first in singles, downing Brian Page 6-2, 6-2 in the No. 4 position. However, No. 106 Farris Gosea tried to rally the Illini by putting the Orange and Blue on the board with a big 6-5(0), 6-2 win over No. 36 Brett Clark.

Yet the Tarheels stymied the comeback when Brayden Schnur delivered No. 4 Jared Hiltzik's first singles loss of the season. The sophomore lost in straight sets, 6-5(5), 6-4.

North Carolina then clinched the match with a hard fought three-set battle in the No. 2 position between two ranked players. No. 17 Ronnie Schneider got the upper hand over No. 46 Tim Kopinski by the score of 5-6(5), 6-2, 6-2.

Despite the fact that the match was clinched, Blake Bazarnik kept fighting and earned a 6-1, 3-6, 6-5(5) victory over Nelson Vick in the No. 5 spot. Finally, the scored rounded out to 5-2 after Johan Skattum downed Alex Jesse 6-5(0), 4-6, 6-2.

The Illini will have a great chance to rebound with their next three matches at home, starting this Wednesday at 6 p.m. vs. No. 22 Notre Dame.
