FT. MYERS, Fla. – With the dual season right around the corner, the #22 Illinois men's tennis team traversed to Ft. Myers, Fla. this past weekend to host its annual Illini Open. Over the last three days, Illinois competed in various doubles and singles matches vs. #15 Florida and the University of South Florida.

"The team showed some great fighting throughout the weekend," Illinois head coach Brad Dancer said. "We have a resilient group that will be a blast for people to watch in Champaign. They play with tremendous spirit and energy."

When the dust settled on Sunday afternoon, Jared Hiltzik emerged unblemished in singles competition, earning three straight-set victories. The fourth ranked singles player in the country finished his tournament today with a 6-4, 6-4 win over #100 Sasha Gozun from South Florida, his highest ranked foe from the weekend. Then, teaming with Alex Jesse, Hiltzik took two-of-three doubles matches, including an upset win over #16 Pramming/Gonzalez of South Florida. As a result, Hiltzik earned the tournament's Most Outstanding Player award.

"Pleased for Jared to score straight set victories over three very good opponents," explained Dancer. "He was forced to play different styles in all three contests and showed great versatility. He is still focusing on improving his offensive play which will help determine his progress."

Also producing strong outings this weekend for the Orange and Blue were juniors Farris Gosea and Tim Kopinski. Gosea went 2-1 in both singles and doubles. Teaming with Blake Bazarnik, the duo only surrendered five total games in both their wins combined. In singles, #106 Gosea delivered straight set victories and took Spencer Newman from Florida to a third set tiebreak before falling short.

Meanwhile, #46 Kopinski shone bright in singles, matching Hiltzik's 3-0 weekend. After a straight set victory over #116 Michael Alford from Florida, Kopinski battled his way to third set tiebreak victories over USF's Roberto Cid and Florida's Diego Hidalgo.

In doubles, #4 Kopinski/Guignon had mixed results from the Illini open. Joining together on day two, the Illinois duo fell to Florida's Piro/Alford 6-5(5) but rebounded with a  6-4 win over #16 Pramming/Gonzalez from USF.

Up next, the Illini shift into high gear with the annual ITA Kickoff weekend. The Orange and Blue will travel to Oxford, Miss. where either the Illini, Ole Miss, Clemson or Michigan will advance to the National Indoor Championships in mid-February.

"We are looking forward to next weekend," continued Dancer. "We will prepare well this week and be engaged Fighting Illini next weekend. The men will be ready."
