CHAMPAIGN, Ill. - Fighting Illini head coach Justin Spring announced that sophomore C.J. Maestas will miss the 2013 season due to a tricep injury sustained during practice while training a floor routine.

"C.J. is irreplaceable as an athlete, a person and an energy source in the gym," Spring said. "He is doing a great job and is continuing to push others, be a leader and keep positive energy in the gym. Now, it's up to the other guys to step up. C.J. is still going to be there to help us along the way, even if it's not on the competition floor."

Maestas, Illinois' first NCAA still rings champion in program history, won the Big Ten all-around title last season and was crowned 2012 Big Ten Gymnast and Freshman of the Year. The four-time U.S. senior national team member and three-time All-American also finished runner-up in the all-around competition at the NCAA Championships and helped the Illini win their first national team title since 1989.

Maestas underwent surgery over Thanksgiving weekend. He is expected to compete at the 2013 U.S. Visa Championships in August and will return to the Illini lineup for the 2013-14 collegiate season.
