Exhibition and about the upcoming season.|
The University of Illinois men's and women's gymnastics squads will perform together in the 15th annual Mixed Pairs exhibition meet Saturday at 7 p.m. at Huff Hall. Admission is free, and fans will have the opportunity to win prizes at the intermission.
The nationally ranked Illinois gymnastics teams will combine to entertain the fans at the intersquad event. The meet features teams of both men and women representing different countries, and each group will be judged on four routines.
Seniors are expected to be some of the top performers on each squad this season. All-American Leo Oka is entering his final year of competition for the Orange and Blue as well as five other seniors on the men's squad. Gina Wiechmann, the 1999 Big Ten balance beam champion, and Carissa Ericson, who holds the second-highest record in the floor exercise, are both leading seniors on the women's team.
The Mixed Pairs meet is the public's first peek at the two teams as they fine-tune their routines for the regular season in January. The women's team will host its season opener at Huff Hall Jan. 13 against Penn State. The men begin their regular season schedule on the road, returning to Huff to host Minnesota on Jan. 20.
