Illini Tied for Fifth in Preseason Poll

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. - The Fighting Illini men's gymnastics team was ranked fifth in the GymInfo Preseason Coaches Poll, tied with Penn State. Illinois is ranked in the top-five in the preseason poll for the sixth consecutive year.

The Illini return 2013 NCAA vault champion Fred Hartville and two other All-Americans from the 2013 NCAA Championships. Mike Wilner earned All-America honors on the rings, and Joey Peters earned All-America honors on the all-around. Illinois also returns C.J. Maestas, who missed 2013 with an injury but was a three-time All-American and NCAA rings champion in 2012.

Michigan, the defending NCAA champion, was the unanimous preseason No. 1, receiving all 11 first-place votes. Oklahoma, Stanford and Ohio State are ranked ahead of the Illini, and Penn State is tied with Illinois at No. 5 with 117 points, just one behind No. 4 Ohio State. California, Iowa, Minnesota and Nebraska round out the top ten marking the second-straight year the Big Ten has seven of the nation's preseason top-ten teams.

The Illini start this year's schedule with the Orange and Blue Mixed Pairs Exhibition on Dec. 8 at 2 p.m.
