PITTSBURGH, Penn. – Junior-to-be C.J. Maestas sits tied for 10th place in the all-around competition following the first day of the P&G Men’s Senior Gymnastics Championships on Friday, August 22. The Corrales, New Mexico, native earned his top mark of the day on the still rings when he tied for first with a score of 15.500.

C.J.'s still rings routine:

Maestas has an all-around score of 86.350, while the current leader, John Orozco, sits at 90.750. The Illinois gymnast finished in the top-ten in the floor competition with a score of 14.900, good for ninth place.

Incoming freshman Bobby Baker is competing in the P&G Junior Championships and leads the field of 11 competitors in the all-around after the first day of competition. Baker finished first in both the still rings and high bar events with scores of 14.300 and 13.950, respectively, and finished in the top-three in every event. His all-around score of 84.450 is over a point ahead of the junior field. Baker’s performance was enough to qualify him for Sunday’s senior division finals.

Former Fighting Illini Paul Ruggeri, competing alongside Maestas in the Senior Championships, ranks ninth in the all-around competition with a score of 87.050. Ruggeri, who starred for the Illini from 2008-12, sits in second place on floor exercise (15.600) and vault (15.350) in addition to a tie for third on the high bar (15.700).

The second day of the Junior and Senior P&G Gymnastics Championships is Sunday, August 24, with television coverage starting at 1:30 p.m. CT on NBC.

Performances at the 2014 P&G Championships will determine all-around and individual national champions, as well as the national team for the junior and senior elite levels. The nationals also traditionally serve as part of the selection process for the U.S. Team for the World Championships. This year, the Senior Pan American Championship Team will also be selected at the 2014 P&G Gymnastics Championships.
