ST. PAUL, Minn. - Illini freshman C.J. Maestas and redshirt senior Paul Ruggeri were among six gymnasts chosen to represent the United States at the 2011 Pan American Games, which will take place Oct. 24-29 in Guadalajara, Mexico, USA Gymnastics announced Saturday. Illini head coach Justin Spring was selected to serve as coach at the Olympic-sanctioned event, while senior Tyler Mizoguchi was chosen as an alternate.
"It's really an honor," Spring said. "This is a huge deal for C.J. and Paul, and I'm excited they get a chance to compete and represent the U.S. in such a great event."
The announcement came just hours after both Maestas and Ruggeri were named to the 15-man U.S. Senior National Team, following their performances at the 2011 Visa Championships. There, Maestas captured silver on rings with a two-day combined total of 30.850, which included a second-day score of 16.000, marking the highest single-day score on rings at this year's championships. The Illini newcomer also finished eighth in the all-around (175.550) to secure an automatic spot on the national team, while Ruggeri was selected by committee after tying for bronze with a two-day total of 30.500 on high bar.
Spring made history at the 2007 Pan American Games, when he won the title on parallel bars and took home the only gold medal for the U.S. men's gymnastics team that year.
The six-member 2011 Pan American Games Team will include Maestas, Ruggeri, Donothan Bailey, Glen Ishino, Sho Nakamori and Brandon Wynn.
