DALLAS - All four Illini advanced to the finals on Friday after several solid performances Wednesday during night one of the 2009 USA Gymnastics Visa Championships in Dallas, Texas. Former Illini Wes Haagensen led the way in the all-around, finishing tied for fourth place with a score of 88.350, while current Illini Daniel Ribeiro scored 15.900 in the pommel horse to sit first overall in the event.
Teammate Luke Stannard was not far behind Ribeiro on pommel horse, placing third with a score of 15.150, while Haagensen claimed second place on the parallel bars (15.250) and third on the rings (15.450). Also competing for the Illini was Paul Ruggeri, who is 16th overall in the all-around (85.100) and is tied for seventh on the parallel bars (15.000).
All four Illini are gunning not only for individual national titles, but are also looking to earn a spot on the 15-member U.S. National. After Friday's finals, the National Team Points System will be used to determine 10 automatic spots on the team out of the 42 athletes remaining. The top 10 athletes on each event and in the all-around will receive points from day one of competition and again from Friday. The points from each day of competition will be added together to create the athletes' final points total. The final five spots on the National team will be selected by USA Gymnastics.
