    Champaign, Ill. - Former Illini gymnast Ben Newman added two more accomplishments to his illustrious career on Thursday, July 14. The Denver, Colo., native took home the gold medal on the pommel horse as well as a bronze medal on the parallel bars at the 17th Maccabiah Games held in Israel. Newman was chosen to represent the United States of America at the international competition as a team captain.

    Ben Newman was a tri-captain of the No. 3 ranked 2004-05 squad. The Academic All-Big Ten gymnast was a three-time Big Ten Pommel Horse Champion and garnered All-American (Pommel Horse) honors in 2004. Newman received a bachelor's degree in finance this past May.

    An estimated 7,000 athletes from 55 countries will be participating in the two week long Olympic-style competition held in the State of Israel every four years. The opening ceremony of the Maccabiah Games took place on July 11 at the Ramat Gan Stadium.
