The Illini will compete in the afternoon qualifying session of the 2013 Big Ten Championships.

INDIANAPOLIS - The Fighting Illini men's gymnastics team will begin its quest to defend its national title in the afternoon qualifying session of the NCAA Championships on Friday, April 19 at Penn State's Recreation Building. Illinois owns a 429.900 national qualifying average after its fifth-place finish at the Big Ten Championships last weekend.
The national qualifier will include both an afternoon and evening session. Illinois will compete in session one at Noon CT alongside No. 2 Oklahoma, No. 3 Michigan, No. 6 Minnesota, No. 10 Nebraska and No. 11 Air Force. The second session will begin at 6 p.m. and will feature No. 1 Penn State, No. 4 Stanford, No. 5 Ohio State, No. 8 Iowa, No. 9 California and No. 12 Temple.
The top three teams from each session will advance to team finals, which will take place Saturday, April 20 at 6 p.m. The top three all-around competitors who are not on a qualifying team and the top three gymnasts who did not qualify on a team or as an all-arounder will advance to finals as well. The all-around competition will take place during team finals, and individual event finals will take place on Sunday, April 21 at 1 p.m.
The Illini won the national title last year for the first time since 1989 and boasted two individual national champions, including UI graduate and nine-time All-American Paul Ruggeri on vault and three-time All-American C.J. Maestas on rings. The 2012 squad also produced 11 All-America honors among seven gymnasts.
