Illini Gymnasts Earn All-America Honors

Although the University of Illinois men's gymnastics team was unable to compete for tonight's team finals, all-arounders Travis Romagnoli and Leo Oka put on a show in front of the Hawkeye-dominated fans earning All-America honors at the NCAA Championships in Iowa City, Iowa, Friday night. It is the first time that two Illini gymnasts have earned this distinction in the all-around since 1955.
With scores of 57.85 by the senior Romagnoli and 57.725 by Oka the tandem placed fourth and sixth respectively in the national competition. Romagnoli scored a 9.925 on high bar to set a new career high and qualify for the NCAA event finals Saturday afternoon. He also took 10th on pommel horse and 13th on parallel bars coming close to advancing to finals on the two events.
Oka placed ninth on floor with his mark of 9.75 and on vault with a 9.60, one spot shy of event finals in both events.
Sophomore J.G. Ketchen posted a 9.725 on high bar for 10th place falling two spots short of a chance at the event finals, while true-freshman Nathan Torres set a career high on still rings with a 9.575 for 22nd place.
