PARK RIDGE, Ill. - Fighting Illini newcomer Fred Hartville earned his second Big Ten Freshman of the Week honor following his two-title performance in Illinois' 21-9 match play victory over Minnesota, the conference office announced Monday.
Hartville notched his fifth vault title of the season in last Friday's meet against the Gophers, matching his career-high score with a 15.300, which ranks fourth all-time at Illinois. The Atlanta native also captured his first career floor title with a 14.900. Hartville won both of his head-to-head battles under the experimental match play format, posting two of Illinois' 21 points.
The award is the third conference accolade of the year for the Illini and first since Hartville garnered the honor on Feb. 18.
The Illinois-Minnesota meet format, which was created by head coach Justin Spring and assistant coach Daniel Ribeiro, featured five head-to-head contests on each apparatus with no set lineups. Each matchup was worth one point. The Big Ten Network will air the meet tonight at 8:30 p.m. CT.
The Orange and Blue will return to action this Saturday, taking on No. 9 California at 5 p.m. CT in Berkeley, Calif.
