Illinois Men's Gymnastics Lose a Close One to Cal, 213.600-214.050

Santa Barbara, Calif. - The University of Illinois men's gymnastics team closed out their regular season with second place in the Gold's Challenge in Santa Barbara Saturday night. California won the 25th annual meet, scoring a 214.050, while the Illini finished with a 213.600. California-Santa Barbara rounded out the competition with a 196.650. The Illini are now 17-4 overall.
Illinois took first place in four of the six events. Senior Leo Oka tied his season best rings score of 9.45 while continuing to dominate in the all-around by also taking first with a 52.80. True-freshman Scott Wetterling set a career-high on parallel bars, scoring a 9.10. Juniors J.G. Ketchen and Sean-Paul Crawford each posted wins on vault (9.20) and floor (9.10), respectively. Crawford keep his streak alive by winning floor for the fifth consecutive meet.
"I think this was our best five event meet this season," said head coach Yoshi Hayasaki. "We have some work to do on pommel horse if we want to be able to compete in the Big Ten and NCAA Championships."
The Illini have next week off to prepare for the Big Ten Championships March 23-24 at Penn State.
