Third-Ranked Illinois Men's Gymnasts Return to West Coast
March 9, 2001
The third-ranked University of Illinois men's gymnastics team looks to continue its unbeaten streak on the West Coast as they head to the four-team Santa Barbara Invitational, in Santa Barbara, Calif., on Sat., March 10 at 9 p.m. CT.
The Illini, 17-3 overall and 7-3 in the Big Ten, will face No. 6 California, No. 12 Stanford and No. 17 Santa Barbara at the one-day event. The squad will be seeking revenge after placing third to California and Iowa at the annual invitational last season.
In previous competition in California, Illinois won the five-team UCLA Invitational and defeated Stanford and Arizona State in a tri-meet. During the trip, the Illini posted its highest road scores of the season of 212.90 and 211.15 and look to do the same this weekend.
"Competing well this weekend is very important to this team," head coach Yoshi Hayasaki said. "We are coming off a great performance against Iowa at home and need to duplicate that on the road which will help us prepare for Big Tens and NCAAs."
