Las Vegas, Nevada - Senior Linh Hoang and true-freshman Scott Wetterling dreams of making the United State national gymnastics team fell short Saturday night in the 2001 Winter Cup Challenge at the Pepsi/All-Sport Arena in Las Vegas. Hoang placed 12th with a 49.350 while Wetterling scored a 48.050 for 16th. The top three finishers were given spots on the national team.

Hoang led the competition during the first two rotations, scoring a 9.10 on rings and an 8.70 on vault. He struggled on high bar, earning a 7.30. Wetterling scored 8.50 on vault and high bar and climbed as high as eighth during the competition.

Ohio State alum Blaine Wilson won the Winter Cup with a 52.650. Minnesota's Clay Strother and Ohio State's Raj Bhavsar made the national team. With Wilson already a national team member, Todd Thornton of Team Texico, who finished fourth in the competition, was given the remaining spot.

Hoang and Wetterling rejoin their Fighting Illini teammates to host Illinois-Chicago Friday, February 16 at Huff Hall. Meet time is scheduled for 7 p.m.
