Feb. 10, 2014
PARK RIDGE, Ill. - Illini newcomer Chandler Eggleston garnered his fifth straight Big Ten Freshman of the week honor, while Illinois redshirt sophomore C.J. Maestas earned his first conference award since he was awarded Big Ten Gymnast and Freshman of the Year in 2012, the conference office announced Monday. Both gymnasts had a handful of top three finishes to help the No. 4 Illini to a convincing 433.350-420.300 win over No. 9 Iowa Friday evening.
Eggleston took home third place on floor, tying teammate Alex Varga with a score of 14.850. Eggleston also took third on high bar, scoring 14.400. Vault was the highlight of the evening for Eggleston, where he came in second with a 14.950.
Maestas led the team with three titles on parallel bars (14.850), all-around (89.200), and still rings, where he set the NCAA record under the new scoring system established in 2008. The previous record, set by Dave Sender of Stanford in 2008, was 16.350. Maestas also placed second on the floor exercise (14.850).
Eggleston's Big Ten Freshman of the Week honor marks his fifth straight of the season, and Maestas' Big Ten Gymnast of the Week honor marks the first Illinois Gymnast of the Week since Paul Ruggeri in March of 2012.
The Orange and Blue will return to action this coming Saturday, Feb. 15, traveling to University Park, Pa. to take on Penn State at 3:00 p.m. CT.
