Two Illini Place In Top 15 at U.S. Winter Cup Challenge

Las Vegas, Nevada - Illinois gymnasts Linh Hoang and Scott Wetterling left their teammates to compete in the first preliminary round of the 2001 Winter Cup Challenge held in the Pepsi/All-Sport Arena in Las Vegas Friday night. Hoang finished eighth with a 49.050 in the all-around while Wetterling placed 14th, scoring a 47.200. The United States Gymnastics Federation sponsored event highlights the top 72 male gymnasts in the country.

Hoang began the session in 16th place after the first rotation of pommel horse but climbed up seven spots to ninth after scoring an 8.70 on rings. He followed his third-place finish on the rings with a vault score of 8.75. Wetterling's top score of the evening was an 8.65 on vault. He scored an 8.45 on parallel bars and high bar for seventh and eighth place, respectively.

Hoang and Wetterling have an opportunity to qualify into the final round Saturday night. Thirty gymnasts competed in the first session while the remaining forty-two are currently competing. The top 36 competitiors from both sessions as well as the 2000 Olympians will be competing for spots on the United States national team.

The final session qualifiers will be determined following the second preliminary session. Winning the first round was Team Texaco's Jason Furr with a 52.700.
