The fourth-ranked University of Illinois men's gymnastics team once again posted a season-best score, 209.30, and defeated No. 10 Michigan State and No. 12 UIC, Saturday night at Jenison Fieldhouse in East Lansing, Mich. The Illini improve to 8-2 overall, 6-2 in the Big Ten.
For the second night in a row, junior Sean-Paul Crawford took first on floor exercise, posting a 8.95 and Linh Hoang scored a 9.20 for first on rings, also the second straight night. The Illini swept parallel bars with a first place finish by senior captain Linh Hoang (9.0) and second place finishes by freshman Scott Wetterling and junior J.G. Ketchen (8.90), while also registering the best score on the event this year with a 35.25.
Seniors Jon Ham and Leo Oka took first on high bar with a 9.00, while Ketchen won vault with a 9.10. The team also had its best score of the season on pommel horse with a 33.55
"We had a much better meet tonight, especially considering that we didn't have as strong a performance on our best events, rings and floor," head coach Yoshi Hayasaki said. "What I was happy about was the improvement on events like pommel horse and parallel bars, which we have struggled with in the past. The potential for this team is great."
The team will be back in action next weekend as they host No. 2 Ohio State on Feb. 3. The coed, Big Ten dual meet is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Huff Hall.
