No. 2 Illini Men's Gymnasts Down Minnesota

    Feb. 2, 2001

The No. 2 University of Illinois men's gymnastics team downed No. 7 Minnesota, 208.150 to 204.350, in a Saturday night dual at Huff Hall. The Illini improve to 7-1 overall, 1-0 in the conference.

Illinois posted it's highest score of the season in the win over the Golden Gophers, while also recording the second-highest score in the nation. The Illini took first place in four of the six events. Senior All-American Leo Oka scored a 9.20 on still rings for the title, while sophomore Sean-Paul Crawford posted the same score on vault to win the event. Sophomore J.G. Ketchen won parallel bars with a score of 9.10 and Greg Cook, the No. 2 gymnast in the nation on high bar, won the event with a 8.95.

"We didn't do as well as we expected to do," said head coach Yoshi Hayasaki. "But we still scored a 208, which was our best score so far."

The Illini will be back in action on Friday and Saturday as they travel to Michigan to take on the No. 1 Wolverines on Jan. 26 and No. 9 Michigan State on Saturday. Both meets are set for 7 p.m.
