Illini Men's Gymnasts Vault to No. 2 Ranking

The University of Illinois men's gymnastics team will take a No. 2 national ranking into this weekend's home opener against the No. 7 Minnesota Golden Gophers, according to the latest GymInfo/NCAA Men's Gymnastics rankings.
The Illini vaulted from their No. 8 preseason ranking to second behind only No. 1 Michigan. The squad also ranks among the top in the individual events with the Illini taking top ranking on still rings, vault and high bar. They rank third on parallel bars, fifth on floor and seventh on pommel horse.
Individually, the Illini have many athletes listed in the top-20, including Leo Oka (senior, Scarborough, Ontario) who is the nation's top all-arounder. Oka also ranks third on vault, sixth on high bar, 12th on floor and 18th on still rings. Linh Hoang (senior, Houston, Texas) is first on vault, fifth on parallel bars, fifth on rings and 12th on floor. Junior J.G. Ketchen (Knoxville, Tenn.) is 10th on still rings and high bar and 11th on vault. Senior Greg Cook (Batavia, Ill.) is the second-rated high bar gymnast and ranks 19th on parallel bars. Also receiving recognition is sophomore Bob Spelic (Cheswick, Pa.) on parallel bars (12th), sophomore Nathan Torres (Albuerquerque, N.M.) on still rings (11th) and true-freshman Scott Wetterling (Pennington, N.J.) on high bar (sixth) and vault (20th).
The Illini are back in action Sat., Jan. 20 at Huff Hall taking on seventh-ranked Minnesota at 7 p.m.
