The fourth-ranked University of Illinois men's gymnastics team once again posted a season-best score of 209.30 and defeated No. 10 Michigan State and No. 12 UIC, Saturday night at Jenison Fieldhouse in East Lansing, Mich. The Illini improve to 8-2 overall, 6-2 in the Big Ten.
For the second straight night, sophomore Sean-Paul Crawford took first on floor exercise posting a 8.95. Senior captain Linh Hoang scored a 9.20 for first on rings and a 9.00 for first on parallel bars. The Illini swept parallel bars with second place finishes by Scott Wetterling and J.G. Ketchen with 8.90 scores, while also registering the team's highest score on the event this year.
Seniors Jon Ham and Leo Oka took first on high bar with a 9.00, while Ketchen won vault with a 9.10. The team also had its best score of the season on pommel horse with a 33.55.
"We had a much better meet tonight, especially considering that we didn't have as strong a performance on our best events, rings and floor," head coach Yoshi Hayasaki said. "What I was happy with was the improvement on events like pommel horse and parallel bars, which we have struggled on in the past. The potential for this team is great."
The team will be back in action next weekend as they host No. 2 Ohio State on Feb. 3. The coed, Big Ten dual meet is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Huff Hall.
