Ruggeri Earns Second Straight Big Ten Weekly Honor

PARK RIDGE, Ill. - Senior Paul Ruggeri (Manlius, N.Y./Fayetteville Manlius) was named Big Ten Gymnast of the Week for the second consecutive week, announced Monday by the conference office. Ruggeri posted three first-place finishes in helping lead the top-ranked Illini to victory over Minnesota and Nebraska in their first tri-meet of the year last Saturday.
Ruggeri finished in the top two on all four events he competed on, including first place on parallel bars (14.500) and high bar (16.100), and tied for first on floor (14.900) with teammate Tyler Mizoguchi. Ruggeri also placed second on vault with a team-best score of 16.200.
The Illini return to Huff Hall next weekend for their first home meet of the season against No. 10 Iowa on Saturday, Jan. 29 at noon. The meet will be held in conjunction with the 19th-ranked Illini women's gymnastics team's meet against No. 15 Iowa. "Gym Jam" will feature free food for the first 1,000 fans beginning at 11 a.m. at Huff Hall and an autograph session with both teams following the meet.
