    Illini Earn Key Conference Win

Illini Earn Key Conference Win - 2/27/99

The Illinois men's gymnastics team posted its best scores of the season on floor and vault en route to a key conference win over Minnesota, 225.950-215.50, Saturday night at Huff Hall.

With the win, the Illini improved to 5-8, 3-8 in the Big Ten.

"We had a great night," head coach Yoshi Hayasaki said. "Unfortunately we could have had a better night. We struggled on high bar. It was like a domino effect. One gymnast falls and we couldn't get in rhythm for the rest of the event."

The nation's top-ranked gymnast Travis Romagnoli (Aurora, Ontario) once again won the all-around competition for the fifth time this season, by a score of 56.850. Teammate Leo Oka (So., Scarborough, Ontario) took second with a career-high score of 56.30, while also winning the still rings with a career-high 9.60. Romagnoli also won the floor (9.70), parallel bars (9.750) and the high bar (9.750).

Sophomore Eric Nishimoto (Northridge, Calif.) also had a career night winning the vault with a 9.650 and had a career-best 9.350 on floor for fifth place.

The Illini will be back in action on March 6 at home as they playhost to third-ranked Ohio State. Start time is set for 7 p.m..
