Illini Fall to Top-Ranked Penn State - 2/20/99

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. -- Despite taking the top two spots in the all-around competition, the fifth-ranked University of Illinois men's gymnastics team dropped a conference dual meet to top-ranked Penn State by a score of 224.20-222.90.

With the loss, the Illini fell to 4-8, 2-8 in the Big Ten.

The nation's top-ranked gymnast Travis Romagnoli (Aurora, Ontario) once again won the all-around competition for the fourth time this season, by a score of 57.30. Teammate Leo Oka (So., Scarborough, Ontario) took second with 55.30. Romagnoli also won the vault (9.60), parallel bars (9.60) and the high bar (9.80).

Other outstanding performances came from Kyle Zak (Sr., King of Prussia, Pa.) as he took second, along with Romagnoli, on floor with a score of 9.25. Greg Cook (So., Batavia, Ill.), fifth-ranked nationally on parallel bars, placed third on the event with a 9.15. Oka also placed third on high bar (9.60), while Eric Nishimoto (So., Northridge, Calif.) finished third on vault (9.35).

The Illini will be back in action on Feb. 27 as they return home to Huff Hall to host No. 19 Minnesota in a key conference dual meet. Start time is set for 7 p.m.
